I have watched a lot of Kdramas and there is something that has been bothering me. Why do the evil people get away with their crimes, repeatedly?
We watch episode after episode of the evil people committing all kinds of crime- murder, attempted murder, assault, kidnapping, destruction of families, stealing businesses, and all manners of really heinous crimes. With them being rewarded for their crimes with riches and victories upon victories, as the victim continues to suffer and be mistreated.
Then in the last few episodes, the evil person seems to miraculously repent and kumbaya all is forgiven. After seeing this behavior in so many dramas, it leaves me with the question, “What message are these dramas sending?” That it is okay to do all manners of evil to get what you want, and for that you get rewarded with massive riches and even when you get caught, you simply get to return to your old life, be forgiven, or escape with a slap on the wrist. What a message to send to the society.
I know some will say it’s just a drama. But is it really? If you watched 100 Year Inheritance you saw a mother-in-law have her DIL locked up in a psychiatric hospital to keep her away from her son. You might think that is too farfetched, but it’s not. Just the other day there was a SK news report about crooked doctors and hospitals, helping families get rid of family members by having them fraudulently locked up in psychiatric hospitals. It makes me wonder if all these stories and plots from dramas are really as farfetched as we thought.
This is not a bash South Korea post, there are many things I like about SK, but in a country so besieged by the pursuit of a perfect image and wealth, so fixated on appearances, just how far are people willing to go, or have already gone.
