Synopsis

The Wang family faces a number of challenges: elitism; discrimination; children moving back home after living on their own during colleges; the power dynamics between husband, wife and family; and decisions about when to marry and have a baby given the financial difficulties in today's Korean society. The first daughter had married into a well-off family, but after they went bankrupt she and the family had to move back to her parents' home. The second daughter is also having financial difficulties as her husband is jobless, while the third daughter suddenly decided to quit her job.

Jang Yong as Wang Bong (Father)

Father of the son and daughters of the King’s Family

At the age over 60 he is becoming a sitting duck for family members, befitting the meaning of his name “Bong”.

Sticking to principles and rules, as is characteristic of a school teacher, he is meticulous and kind.
However, his wife criticizes him for being a talkative and stubborn man.
He is full of anxiety now. He has supported his parents and taken care of his children to the point of breaking his back, but now he has only debt and illness. He is now deputy principal, but he is far from planning out his comfortable retirement. He feels greatly burdened by having to support his unmarried children.
Two daughters are already married. But he has to support three children until they marry and become independent. His mother is so healthy that he thinks she could live longer than him. His younger brother, who is in his mid-thirties, is jobless and lives off of the parents.
I fear they are trapped in deep shit without me and I become anxious about my health.
I can’t sleep well at night when I think of life in retirment as I have no means of support.
I feel so lonely and shed tears as I have none to whom I open my heart. I am a typical father of this era.

Kim Hae Sook as Lee Ang Geum (Mother)

Mother of the King’s family brothers and sisters
She married an eldest son of a poor family and led a hard life at her parents-in-law. And she married off brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
She has supported her mother-in-law and brother-in-law.
She lived affluently with her parents who were running a business and the only thing she felt she lacked was learning. She married a poor teacher in the hope that she might be respected as a teacher’s wife. She lived on a low salary, bearing and rearing five children, supporting the mother-in-law and brother-in-law. She was ill-treated as she gave birth to four daughters in a row without a son. She went through a lot of distress during married life and became full of regret.
She became relieved after belatedly giving birth to a son.
As her daughters grew, she was encouraged and gained in strength as they sided with her.
Therefore she thought that daughters were better than sons. However, she likes the elder daughter more than the second daughter who is one year younger.
The elder daughter always helps her mother financially while the second daughter, a penny-pincher, has never bought her even a pair of socks. She also likes her son-in-law more than the other sons-in-law. She has bitter feelings because of her regrettable life. Sometimes she thinks it is better to live alone as the husband and the children do not understand her.

Oh Hyun Kyung as Wang Soo Bak (1st Daughter)

The eldest daughter of King’s Family.
She was well-cared for as the first child and was much loved by her mother.
She was pretty and popular with men. As she was loved at home, she was also loved outside.
People say she is immature, egotistic and is full of vanity, but she herself never thinks so.
She thinks of marriage as meeting with a wealthy man and lives only taking care of herself.
She doesn’t know such things conflict between daughters-in-law and their husband’s mothers. She abhors the in-law world of husband’s family. She was living an enviable life wearing a luxury clothes and carrying a luxury bag, then suddenly her husband’s business went bankrupt and her nightmare begin.
She is sorry to her parents. She has an antipathy toward her husband. Even her younger sister despises her. Soo-bak suffers from depression, surrenders and goes into her home.

Lee Tae Ran as Wang Ho Bak (2nd Daughter)

Second daughter in the King’s Family
She did not receive much love from her parents during childhood. After marriage, the situation did not change. So Ho-bak lost her heart. When she met with difficulty, she blamed her mother. From childhood, she always had to take a back seat because of her elder sister.
Her real name is Hyo-bak as written in the family register, but she is called Ho-bak both at home and in school.
She was a better student than her elder sister and she was an exemplary pupil in school.
She was awarded with more citations than the elder sister. However the elder sister always came first.
When Soo-bak was playing with dolls, Ho-bak had to do the dishes. She was so plainly discriminated against by her mother that all the neighborhood knew it. During childhood, she thought there must be a hidden secret involving her birth like a story in a drama. Even she once dreamed she was waiting endlessly in front of the gate of her home for her real mother to take her away with her.
After she became a mother, she knew that one came to prefer one child to another child even though she gave birth to both.
She made efforts to be fair towards her children as she didn’t want her children to suffer the same pain that she suffered. She married a jobless man, who was the friend of her cousin and was younger than her by one year.
Sometimes she called her husband a mama’s boy and sometimes she envied him. And then, Ho-bak who was living day by day, experienced a great incident.

Lee Yoon Ji as Wang Gwang Bak (3rd Daughter)

Third daughter of the King’s Family

Proverb says that the third daughter does not need to be met before her wedding in the belief that the third daughter might be well educated in the home. Gwang Bak, the third daughter, is not bad looking and is a romantic waiting for the kind of love that is rare in this world.

Easy-going, frank and without false modesty she is supported by her father King Bong and her mother Ang-geum bites on the bridle.

She gets along well with family members and she is a troubleshooter in the home.

She believes family affairs transcend right and wrong. So sometimes she is overcome by emotion and sides with someone unintentionally.
From childhood, her dream was to be a writer, but she takes the teachers’ exam and became a school teacher. She resigned from the school after seven years and shocked her family by renouncing working life in order to prepare for becoming a writer.
One day, a man approached her via her youngest brother. Due to her mistake and misunderstanding, they fought with each other, but he came into her mind at last.
She wants to catch his heart. But she is not good at dating.
She learned that tempting a man is the most difficult job in the world.

Jo Seong Ha as Go Min Joong (Soo Bak's husband)

The oldest son-in-law of the King’s Family
As an eldest son among four brothers and sisters he married by arrangement the eldest daughter among five brothers and sisters.
Min-jung, who had to play the role of the firstborn for both families, could assume the role well when his business was going well. But when his business went bankrupt, his fate began to turn.
At a time of need, a couple should unite. However, his wife just resented it and did not support him. His marriage to a beautiful school teacher reached a crisis point.
He could not return to his parents’ home with Soo-bak who had been suffering from depression.
He lived in a rented basement house for a while and then moved to the home of wife’s parents.
A proverb goes that a man would not live in the home of his wife’s parents if he has some unhulled barley.
But his mother-in-law started to treat him with a sneer and found fault with everything he did.
The mother-in-law even interfered with the private matters of him and his wife. His life in his wife’s parents' home was so hard.
He tried to make a comeback with a parcel delivery service. But when a Pandora’s box Soo-bak hid was opened, Min-jung encountered the most critical crisis of his life.

Oh Man Seok as Heo Se Dal (Ho Bak's husband)

The second son-in-law in the King’s Family

As his name suggests, he has a smack of bravado.

He places great importance on outer appearance and behavior and he thinks a little foam is good either for man or for beer.

He thinks that because he is a pure man he married an ugly girl, one year older than he.

He met her in the house of his friend. She approached him kindly giving him something to eat and they went to see a movie together. He married her after she conceived. He complains she talks without thinking and sometimes blames him, kicks him and gives him a pinch.

His wife’s parents often neglect him comparing him with the wealthy elder son-in-law.

He suppresses his feelings, hiding a deep grudge. He would stop anyone who would marry the daughter of a wealthy family. However, he bought an apartment thanks to Ho-bak and talks big when he visits his wife’s parents. Then he begins to work for a hotel with the help of Ho-bak. In the hotel, he encounters the wealthy heiress to the hotel owner as if by fate.

Han Joo Wan as Choi Sang Nam (Gwang Bak's love interest)

His father named him Sang-nam in the hope the he becomes a man's man, a superman. As his name implies, he is making efforts to become a superior man. As his family’s fortune went downhill when he was in the second grade of high school, he quit school and started to make money.

He persuaded his father who told him he should not give up college and bought a forkcrane with father’s money set aside for his college registration plus a bank loan.

From then he worked as a heavy machine operator and became a president of a heavy vehicle company. He amassed a huge wealth. He is assiduous on work he thinks worth doing and takes pride in his occupation.

Mild but upright and having a good sense fo humor, he is a warm-hearted man. His weakest point is that he is easily hurt. He is a high school dropout, but he believes a college diploma is not essential.

With relatively good outer looks, he is a veteran of interacting with people as he worked long in the labor world.

However, Sang-nam has his own deep pain.

He decided never to have a love affair again after he was betrayed by his first love.

Suddenly a woman, Gwang bak, comes into his heart.
With no dating experience the pure girl swung and touched his mind and then the pains in Sang-nam’s heart began slowly to be healed.
